The expectation is that the Philadelphia Phillies will soon welcome ace Zack Wheeler back from his final rehab start next week, a move that could put Taijuan Walker’s rotation spot—and possibly his long-term future with the club—in serious doubt.
In a recent mock trade scenario, SI.com’s Patrick McAvoy projected the Phillies could strike a blockbuster deal with the Houston Astros, sending Walker along with two top prospects in exchange for All-Star infielder Isaac Paredes, addressing Philadelphia’s need for a stronger offensive presence.
Walker, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal before the 2023 season, has largely underperformed in Philadelphia, struggling this year with an ERA above 9.00 and continuing a stretch of inconsistent results over multiple seasons with the club.
The idea behind the proposed trade is that the Phillies would upgrade their infield offense with Paredes’ power bat while the Astros, in need of pitching depth, take a chance on Walker despite his struggles.
