The Philadelphia Phillies made another roster adjustment before Friday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, sending infielder/outfielder Otto Kemp back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley while recalling outfielder Steward Berroa to take his place on the major league roster.
In a separate move, the Phillies placed starting pitcher Aaron Nola on the paternity list. Interim manager Don Mattingly indicated that Nola is still expected to make his next scheduled start, while right-handed reliever Nolan Hoffman was promoted from Triple-A to provide additional bullpen depth during his absence.
Mattingly explained that the decision to option Kemp was largely driven by playing time concerns. Since being recalled on May 18, Kemp had seen limited action, appearing in just a handful of games and receiving only five at-bats since May 20.

The young utility player has struggled offensively this season, collecting only two hits in 25 at-bats across 13 major league appearances. According to Mattingly, regular playing time is more beneficial for Kemp’s development than remaining on the bench in a reserve role.
Originally projected to share left-field duties in a platoon arrangement, Kemp’s opportunities diminished as the season progressed. The Phillies experimented with other options, including Felix Reyes and Edmundo Sosa, leaving fewer chances for Kemp to contribute.
With the club seeking greater defensive flexibility and a true backup capable of covering all three outfield spots, Berroa emerged as the better fit for the roster.

Berroa brings versatility, speed, and switch-hitting ability to the Phillies’ bench. The 26-year-old, who began his professional career in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and made his MLB debut in 2024, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in April for cash considerations.
Mattingly praised Berroa’s defensive skills and energy, inserting him into Friday’s lineup as the starting center fielder and expecting him to provide value both as a reserve and occasional starter.

Meanwhile, Kemp will continue receiving everyday at-bats with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs while working at multiple defensive positions.
The Phillies believe consistent playing time in both the infield and outfield will aid his development and better prepare him for future opportunities at the major league level.
Berroa, who has previous experience handling a part-time role, earned the promotion after batting .250 with four home runs, nine stolen bases, and a .752 OPS in 38 games at Triple-A this season.
