The Chicago White Sox have rapidly transformed from one of MLB’s worst teams in recent years into a legitimate American League Central and postseason contender this season.
With their resurgence, Chicago is expected to be aggressive buyers at the MLB trade deadline, focusing heavily on upgrading both their starting rotation and bullpen.
According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the White Sox are viewed as a strong landing spot for Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray (3.03 ERA) and closer Aroldis Chapman (0.44 ERA), two veteran arms who could significantly boost their pitching staff.

While both players would immediately strengthen Chicago’s roster, Gray’s full no-trade clause could complicate any potential deal, though he could still become a valuable long-term piece due to a 2027 club option.
Chapman also offers more than a rental option, with his 2027 vesting clause making him a potential multi-year bullpen anchor, and together both veterans could help push the White Sox deeper into a surprise playoff run.
