The Philadelphia Phillies entered the second half of the season hoping to make a statement against the New York Mets, but a series loss did little to change the bigger picture.
Despite their setback, the Phillies remain firmly in the playoff race and are expected to be active buyers ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
That outlook would have seemed unlikely earlier this season when Philadelphia stumbled to a poor start and fell 10 games below .500. Since then, however, the club has engineered one of baseball’s most impressive turnarounds, putting itself back into contention and within striking distance of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
As the Phillies look to continue their climb, the front office is evaluating areas of need.
While the roster features plenty of star power, there are still weaknesses that could be addressed before the deadline, particularly in terms of overall depth and bullpen support.
According to a recent update to The Athletic’s trade board, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho has emerged as a potential fit for Philadelphia.
The Blue Jays have endured a disappointing season after coming close to winning the World Series last year and investing heavily during the offseason. If Toronto decides to sell, Varsho could become one of its most attractive trade chips.
The 29-year-old is playing on an expiring contract, making him a logical candidate to be moved if the Blue Jays fall further out of playoff contention.
Through the season, Varsho has posted a .239 batting average with a .305 on-base percentage, a .384 slugging percentage, seven home runs, and 24 RBIs.
While his offensive numbers have declined from a year ago, he remains a capable power threat and one of the better defensive outfielders in the league.
For the Phillies, Varsho could provide valuable outfield depth without requiring a massive prospect package in return.
However, with the bullpen viewed as a more urgent priority, Philadelphia may ultimately choose to devote most of its trade resources toward strengthening its relief corps while keeping an eye on affordable position-player upgrades.
