The New York Mets have parted ways with veteran infielder Christian Arroyo, releasing the former Top-100 prospect after he spent much of the 2026 season playing in the organization’s minor-league system.

Arroyo had signed two separate minor-league contracts with the Mets this year, but the club has now decided to move on as the season progresses.

The 31-year-old had been productive at the plate for Triple-A Syracuse, posting a .279/.331/.435 slash line across 261 plate appearances. Despite that respectable offensive production, Arroyo was unable to secure a return to the major leagues with New York.

Mets Signed Arroyo During the Offseason

New York initially brought Arroyo into the organization in January, signing him to a minor-league contract and giving him an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during spring training.

Arroyo appeared in 12 Grapefruit League games for the Mets, going 6-for-27 for a .222 batting average. He also recorded one home run and three walks while striking out five times.

Although his spring numbers did not stand out, his extensive major-league experience and ability to play multiple infield positions gave him a chance to remain in the organization.

Released and Re-Signed Days Later

The Mets first released Arroyo from his minor-league deal on June 1. However, the separation was brief, as the two sides reached another agreement just one day later.

Arroyo returned to the organization and continued playing at the Triple-A level, hoping another opportunity would eventually lead to a major-league call-up.

That opportunity never materialized. His next major-league plate appearance will have to wait, as his last MLB at-bat came in 2023.

Former First-Round Pick Never Reached Expected Ceiling

Arroyo entered professional baseball with considerable expectations. The San Francisco Giants selected him 25th overall in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, and he was viewed as one of the organization’s promising young players.

He eventually reached the majors with San Francisco in 2017, but he never established himself as a consistent everyday player.

Over the course of his career, Arroyo also spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox. Despite playing for several organizations, he never appeared in more than 87 games or accumulated more than 300 plate appearances in a single MLB season.

Limited MLB Production

Arroyo’s major-league career has produced solid but modest numbers. Across 295 games, he owns a .252/.299/.394 batting line with 24 home runs and 120 RBIs.

His inability to secure a permanent major-league role has largely kept him moving between organizations and their Triple-A affiliates.

The Mets became his third organization over the past three seasons, with the majority of that time spent in the minors.

Injuries Have Slowed His Career

Injuries have also played a role in limiting Arroyo’s opportunities over the past few seasons.

In 2024, he appeared in only 30 games for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds. He hit .237/.305/.360 during that stint while missing nearly two months during the first half of the season because of an injury.

The following year brought additional setbacks. Arroyo missed 20 days in April and was sidelined for the entire month of July because of separate injuries.

Strong Production With Phillies’ Triple-A Affiliate

When healthy in 2025, however, Arroyo showed that he could still be a productive minor-league hitter.

Playing for the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, he appeared in 45 games and produced an impressive .314/.384/.485 slash line. He also hit five home runs and drove in 37 runs.

That performance helped him earn another opportunity with the Mets heading into 2026.

What’s Next for Arroyo?

Despite his release, Arroyo still has time to find another organization before the minor-league season comes to an end. His experience, versatility and respectable production at Triple-A could make him an attractive depth option for a team dealing with injuries or searching for additional infield help.

At 31, Arroyo may no longer have the prospect status he carried earlier in his career, but his extensive professional experience could still give him another chance.

For the Mets, meanwhile, the decision represents another roster adjustment as the organization evaluates its minor-league depth and prepares for the future.

Arroyo’s latest departure marks another chapter in a career that began with first-round expectations but has largely been defined by short major-league stints, minor-league production and a series of opportunities to reestablish himself.
