The Texas Rangers have officially announced a roster move in the wake of their star shortstop’s sudden trip to the injured list.
To fill the gap, the defending champions are turning to a versatile veteran, a player who brings both experience and defensive flexibility at a crucial point in the season.
The 33-year-old infielder-outfielder arrives in Texas after recently being released by a division rival.
Known for his defensive skills across multiple positions, he was the longest-tenured player on his former team and even captured the 2024 American League Gold Glove Award as a utility man.
Over his seven major league seasons, he compiled a .205 batting average with 61 home runs, 116 stolen bases, and a .691 OPS.
Despite a rocky finish with his previous club, he began the 2025 campaign on fire.
Through mid-May, he hit .289 with an .869 OPS, adding seven home runs and 13 RBIs before falling into a prolonged slump that eventually led to his release.
Even with his struggles, he has contributed nine homers, 12 steals, and a .622 OPS in 88 games this year — production that could prove valuable for a Rangers squad suddenly in need of depth.
Team president of baseball operations Chris Young explained that the decision to bring in the veteran was made to stabilize the roster after losing their two-time World Series MVP shortstop to emergency surgery.
“We felt it was important to add a player who can immediately step in and provide versatility,” Young said, emphasizing that the newcomer’s experience and defensive range were major factors.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rangers also transferred young outfielder Evan Carter to the 60-day injured list as he continues recovering from a broken right wrist.

The move underscores how much the team has been tested by injuries this season, forcing management to dig into its depth and make quick adjustments.
While fans may see this signing as a stopgap measure, the veteran utility man has a track record of delivering clutch performances and steady defense.
With the Rangers still battling to stay in contention, his presence could end up playing a bigger role than expected in keeping Texas competitive during a difficult stretch of the season.
