BREAKING: New South Carolina Defensive Ends Coach Announced

The University of South Carolina football program has officially named Deion Barnes as its new defensive ends and outside linebackers coach, the school announced Tuesday. Barnes replaces Sterling Lucas, who departed for LSU to join Lane Kiffin’s staff.

Head coach Shane Beamer praised Barnes’ experience and track record, noting that he brings a proven ability to develop top defensive talent. Barnes spent the last three seasons as Penn State’s defensive line coach, where he mentored 21 All-Big Ten players, including five first-team selections, and coached seven defensive ends who were later drafted into the NFL. Prior to that, he served as a graduate assistant at Penn State for three years, working with the defensive line.

A former linebacker at Penn State, Barnes earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 and played professionally, signing with the New York Jets in 2015 and briefly joining the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad in 2016. He began his coaching career at his high school alma mater, Philadelphia Northeast.

Lucas’ departure had led to speculation that star EDGE Dylan Stewart might transfer. However, Stewart recently confirmed he will return for his junior season in 2026, ensuring continuity in the Gamecocks’ defense.

Barnes joins South Carolina’s 2026 staff alongside recent hires such as Kendal Briles (offensive coordinator), Randy Clements (offensive line coach), and Stan Drayton (running backs and assistant head coach). His addition strengthens a coaching team focused on player development and building a competitive program for the upcoming season.
