The relationship between the Philadelphia Phillies and franchise star Bryce Harper has reportedly become strained during the offseason, with general manager Dave Dombrowski’s moves allegedly affecting Harper’s trade value and raising speculation that the superstar could eventually request a trade.
If that scenario unfolds, analyst Mark Powell suggested a controversial trade idea involving the Phillies’ cross-state rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, proposing a deal that would send the league’s top prospect, Konnor Griffin, to Philadelphia in exchange for Harper.
Powell noted that although Harper’s potential move to Pittsburgh would be an unusual fit, the Pirates could benefit from his power hitting and defensive flexibility at corner outfield or first base, especially given their limited offensive depth despite recent additions.
In return, the Phillies would sacrifice their established superstar but could acquire a potential generational talent in Griffin, whose minor league performance has shown impressive power and speed, including a strong 2025 campaign across multiple levels of the minors.
Despite the potential financial relief from Griffin’s long-term contract projection and the upside of securing a future cornerstone player, the trade remains unlikely due to Harper’s contract size and the rivalry factor, though Powell suggested the move could still be worthwhile if the logistical challenges were resolved.
