Big Season Ahead: Accelerated Return of Key Phillies Player Forces Early Rotation Shuffle, Setting the Philadelphia Phillies Up for an Exciting 2026 Season

The Philadelphia Phillies will open the 2026 season on Thursday with a different ace on the mound, as Cristopher Sánchez gets the Opening Day start while Zack Wheeler continues his recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.

Wheeler’s rehab has progressed faster than expected, and the team is targeting an April return, which will shake up the starting rotation but promises the Phillies’ ace back at the top soon.

Manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Wheeler’s recovery, noting that his command and velocity are on track for spring training.

Wheeler is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, pitching three innings as part of his 30-day rehab plan, which should set him up for a return to the Phillies’ rotation next month.

In Wheeler’s absence, the Phillies’ rotation will feature Sánchez, Aaron Nola, Jesús Luzardo, Taijuan Walker, and rookie Andrew Painter, giving the team depth while introducing some new faces.

Walker, who joined Philadelphia in 2023 on a four-year, $72 million deal, has had an up-and-down tenure with the team, and is expected to move into a different role once Wheeler returns to the top of the rotation.

Wheeler’s comeback reinforces the Phillies’ status as having one of MLB’s most formidable rotations in 2026. Since joining Philadelphia in 2020, Wheeler has been among the league’s best starters, leading all pitchers with 28.6 fWAR, while Nola is fifth with 20.6 fWAR.

Last season, Wheeler posted a 2.71 ERA with 195 strikeouts in 149⅔ innings, earning a third All-Star nod and a ninth-place finish in the Cy Young voting.

Compared to the worry when Wheeler went down in August 2025, the outlook is far brighter, with the ace eager to return for the majority of the season.

Even without him, the rotation remains strong, but with Wheeler back in the mix alongside Sánchez and Luzardo, the Phillies’ pitching staff is one of the most exciting and fearsome in baseball.
