New York Mets infielder Jorge Polanco’s season is officially over after manager Andy Green confirmed that the veteran will undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle.
Polanco was placed on the 10-day injured list with ankle bursitis, bringing a disappointing end to his first season in New York after appearing in just 37 games.
The Mets signed the former All-Star to a two-year, $40 million deal in December, hoping he could help fill the void created by Pete Alonso’s departure to the Baltimore Orioles.
However, injuries severely limited Polanco throughout the season. He made only two starts at first base and spent the other 33 games serving as the team’s designated hitter while dealing with recurring Achilles and ankle problems.
Polanco struggled offensively during his limited time on the field, hitting just .148 with two home runs and six RBIs.
The 33-year-old has been a much more productive hitter over his career, batting .259 with 156 homers and 576 RBIs across 1,125 games with the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and Mets.
The Mets also made several roster changes following Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. Right-hander Jack Weisenburger was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, while the club recalled right-hander Chayce McDermott and infielder Eric Wagaman from Syracuse.
With Polanco now sidelined for the remainder of the season, New York will have to find additional production and depth as the club continues its push down the stretch.
