Major-Boost: Rangers Shake Up Roster By Adding Multi-Position Outfielder to Bolster Outfield Depth

The Texas Rangers announced today that they have claimed outfielder Michael Helman off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock. To clear space on the 40-man roster, utility player Jonathan Ornelas has been designated for assignment.

Helman, who will turn 29 on Friday, was originally selected in the 11th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins out of Texas A&M. After being acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals during spring training,

Helman was claimed by the Pirates just last week. In an ironic twist, he was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh before ever appearing in a game, to make room for former Ranger Nick Solak.

A versatile player, Helman has experience at multiple positions, most frequently second base and center field. A right-handed hitter, he’s logged 10 plate appearances over nine major league games, all with the Twins earlier in 2024.

The decision raises some questions, as Ornelas primarily plays infield. It’s possible the Rangers are prioritizing outfield depth, especially given Kevin Pillar’s ongoing struggles at the plate (.214/.214/.262 with a .225 xwOBA). Helman may offer a right-handed option the team sees as a potential upgrade.
