The New York Mets parted ways with former Chicago Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay on Thursday, ending his stint with the organization after he spent the season with Triple-A Syracuse.
According to MLB.com’s transaction log, the right-handed pitcher was released and is now free to pursue opportunities with other clubs.
Alzolay, 31, enjoyed a standout campaign with the Cubs in 2023 when he emerged as a key bullpen arm.
Over 64 innings, he recorded a 2.67 ERA while striking out 67 batters, establishing himself as one of Chicago’s most reliable relievers.
However, his momentum was short-lived. His velocity dipped early in 2024, and he struggled to a 4.67 ERA across 17.1 innings before landing on the injured list.
Later that summer, Alzolay underwent Tommy John surgery, a setback that ultimately led the Cubs to non-tender him ahead of the 2025 season.
The Mets signed Alzolay to a two-year minor league contract before the 2025 campaign, but he never reached the major league roster as he continued recovering from surgery.
Now back on the open market, Alzolay will look for another opportunity to revive his career.
While his breakout season in Chicago is a few years behind him, his past success could still make him an intriguing option for teams seeking bullpen depth.
