Tennessee’s recruiting momentum took another hit this week, adding to growing concerns around the Volunteers’ 2027 class.
Just a day after five-star running back David Gabriel-Georges was projected by Rivals to choose Ohio State Buckeyes, the Vols received more disappointing news on the recruiting front.
Head coach Josh Heupel and his staff have now seen five-star wide receiver Easton Royal cancel his planned trip to Knoxville.
Royal had emerged as one of Tennessee’s most important flip targets despite being committed to Texas Longhorns, but his decision to scrap the visit significantly lowers the chances of the Volunteers making a late push for his commitment.
The timing is particularly frustrating for Tennessee because Royal had recently spoken highly of the program. He praised the Vols’ track record of developing wide receivers, pointing to their success producing NFL-caliber talent, award winners, and productive offensive playmakers.
Tennessee’s coaching staff had also emphasized how its offensive concepts translate directly to professional football, a message that appeared to resonate with the elite prospect.
However, recruiting momentum shifted when reports surfaced that Royal had canceled scheduled visits to both Tennessee and Ole Miss Rebels.
The nation’s top-ranked wide receiver still plans to visit Florida Gators before returning to Texas, signaling that Tennessee may no longer be a serious contender in his recruitment.
While missing on Royal is disappointing, wide receiver remains one of the strongest positions on Tennessee’s roster.
The Vols already have talented pass-catchers such as TK Keys and Braylon Staley in the pipeline, which softens the blow. Even so, adding a player of Royal’s caliber would have elevated an already talented group.
The coaching staff could now shift its full attention toward another elite target, Eric McFarland III. The IMG Academy standout recently visited Tennessee and remains one of the most coveted receivers in the country.
Competition from programs such as Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Florida, and Ohio State will make the battle difficult, but Tennessee may now intensify its efforts after Royal’s departure from the picture.
The bigger concern for Tennessee fans is the overall state of the recruiting class. Despite last year’s success, the Volunteers currently sit well below expectations in the national rankings and have yet to build significant momentum on the trail.
Recruiting is notoriously competitive, and even top programs lose more battles than they win, but supporters are eager to see tangible results from the staff’s efforts.
For now, Tennessee’s hopes rest on turning upcoming visits into commitments. After a string of recruiting setbacks, the Volunteers desperately need positive news to reignite excitement around the future of the program.
