The Tennessee Volunteers had an excellent spring in the transfer portal, building one of the strongest incoming classes in the country, but they still have one remaining roster spot to address.
For a time, the staff appeared to be holding off on other moves while awaiting a decision from highly regarded 7-foot-1 prospect Favour Ibe.
According to VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs, Tennessee’s strategy centered on Ibe’s visit and whether he would choose the program before they fully shifted focus elsewhere.

However, that plan ended when Ibe ultimately committed to the Virginia Cavaliers, a notable recruiting miss for head coach Rick Barnes and his staff during an otherwise strong offseason.
On3 reporter Joe Tipton confirmed Ibe’s decision, noting that the four-star center—ranked No. 82 nationally—had also considered schools like Tennessee, Alabama, and Villanova before choosing Virginia.
With that decision made, the Volunteers have redirected their attention to other options in the transfer portal, including 7-foot Seattle transfer Austin Maurer.

Maurer, a developing big man from Medford, Oregon, is currently regarded as one of the top available centers, according to A to Z Sports’ Zach Ragan.
While Tennessee already has established options at center, depth remains a priority, and Maurer could provide long-term upside if he is willing to embrace a developmental role under Barnes.
As the roster continues to take shape in Knoxville, Maurer now stands out as one of the key remaining targets as the Volunteers look to finalize their lineup.
